I have several heirloom rifles I’ve inherited from family members over the years as well as another dozen I’ve bought. NONE of them is more special than my grandfathers 1968 Marlin 336RC in 35Rem. I’ve had this gun now for nearly 30 years but rarely deer hunted with it until I bought my river bottom/swamp farm here in west TN in 2010. If there is a better “swamp gun” than a 336RC in 35R I’ve yet to find it! For some reason this old gun has issues with the Hornady Leverevo ammo (dimpled yet unfired primers) and I just wanted more juice and penetration on my 220# swamp bucks so this load is what I chose. I also have a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70 that I shoot the 300Barnes Buffalo Bore in that I use when the weather isn’t nice enough to take the 35 out. In the 45-70 the Buffalo Bore IS EARTH SHATTERING recoil and power, but honestly in the 35 it’s not as huge of a jump in pressure over common ammo so the recoil with these 220s are no different to me than the Leverevos and about equal to my 30/06s. But WHOA are the deer allergic to them! Penetration you ask? Line up the deer and take SEVERAL of them with one shot! This ammo does what I want it to do, bore holes COMPLETELY thru large bucks! (And YES in case you are wondering, I have a 30-30 Win but it’s laughable compared to the 35R when this ammo is used) I seriously considered a new Browning BLR in 358Win but after using this ammo in my 35R I see there is no justifiable need as the difference is splitting hairs and essentially undetectable on the deer! The 35R has always suffered because of the SAMMI specs used were in consideration of the old Model 8 semi-auto Rems. But when using the Marlin there is a considerable amount more power to be used if the ammo is loaded to utilize that ability. Using these loads the 35R is capable of taking ANY big game animals in the lower 48 inside of 200+yds. This ammo SOLIDILY brings the the 35Rem into the modern age and assures it’s place where it’s always been deserving of as the TRUE KING OF THE BIG GAME BRUSH CARTRIDGES!!! 😉
This round had taken 4 Maine black bears in 5 years, all devastating one-shot kills. Entrance wounds are roughly 2X bullet diameter, exits are 5X bullet diameter or more. Recoil is noticeably more than LevRevs or CoreLokts and groups are 1.5″ at 100 yards instead of 1″, but who cares? If you want to anchor the largest black bear around, this is the round to use. Now if only Buffalo Bore could get a supplier for the brass
